Why Moving Away For University Is The Best Thing You Can Do

The whole point of going to university is to get a degree, right? Obviously! I mean, we put ourselves through 3-4 years of studying to come out with a solid higher education qualification to help us excel in life.

But, as anyone who has ever been to university will tell you, the experience is educational in more ways than one. It can be a whole new lease of life when you head to university, and even more so when you move away.

University isn’t just about learning. It’s an enriching period in life; which grants you your first true taste of independence and freedom, as well as the opportunity to broaden your horizons and meet a ton of fabulous new people. It doesn’t just teach you about your chosen degree subject, it teaches you how to stand on your own two feet, how to fend for yourself, and for some of us – how to cook!

And this is especially true for students who choose to go to university away from home. There’s something about living in another city, taking on a new period of life, and experiencing those 18-21 years with other students that shapes your life experience.

The main reason is that by moving away, it gives you a new lease of life surrounding being a responsible adult. You’ll either have a shared student flat or a student house, where all of a sudden you’re thrown into deciding on all your meals, paying bills, cooking, cleaning, and ensuring you wake up on time to all your lectures! There’s no Mum or Dad there to give you a helping hand through your day to day student life. It really does make you independent and helps you discover what you’re really like when you have to stand on your own.

If you’re unsure about it, look at moving to a university which isn’t in one of the UK’s biggest and most bustling cities – like London or Manchester. Because of their size, they can be a little daunting, and don’t often have that close knit student community that smaller cities and towns have.

Places like Preston, Huddersfield, Leeds, Sheffield and Wolverhampton are on a slightly smaller scale, but are still big enough to have a jam packed student schedule full of activities, offering that buzz of student life and a cosmopolitan vibe.

When it comes to finding student accommodation, you’ll find there are more modern, upmarket apartments in a lot of Northern cities, like Sheffield. The student accommodation in Sheffield allows youngsters to stay with around 2-5 other students in stylish, contemporary apartments which banish all those stereotypes of basic, run down houses.

Plus, most student accommodation in places such as Sheffield will ensure that your apartments are close to the two universities there, and also nearby to shopping centres, bars and restaurants, as well as transport links.

Here’s a few other reasons why moving away when at University is a great idea…

  1. First up. No one will know all the embarrassing crap you did in the past, so you can basically reinvent yourself into this amazing, well rounded, intelligent and interesting person.
  2. You’re forced to learn to do things. Like cook an actual edible meal and wash your clothes without dying everything pink. Both of these things will probably take a few attempts to get right.
  3. Your parents will be proud of your independence and all your new achievements. Like being able to boil an egg without Googling how to do it.
  4. You can come home drunk, vomit in the middle of the floor and no one will shout at you. The only person who can be disappointed in you is yourself. Don’t tell anyone that we encouraged this though!
  5. You can eat Coco Pops for your dinner for a week straight and not have to listen to your parents’ disapproving comments regarding your immature life choices.

Remember that you only really get one chance to live in university halls. And nowadays, it’s more common that univerisyt halls have that touch of modern day, classy living, so you don’t have to worry about slumming it. And if that doesn’t make much difference to you, trust us, it will make a huge difference to the minds of your parents!

Once you move away, as much as you enjoy it, it will make you appreciate home that little bit more. You’ll find yourself looking forward to seeing your family and friends. And even the little things, like you know, central heating and a clean kitchen full of edible food.

Do not underestimate how much you will appreciate eating meals that you did not have to pay for or cook for yourself.

If you’re thinking of moving away to go to university, then trust me when I say – it will be the best thing you ever do!
