What Keeps Us Awake At Night?

If you’re anything like me, you may find yourself being someone who tosses and turns at night. It’s pretty bad, as there isn’t much worse feeling than just lying there, checking the time every 30 minutes, and realising that it’s going to take a while until you drop off.

I get myself really panicky, thinking that everyone else in the world is asleep and I’m literally the only one lay awake, usually stressing.

Of course, I’m not the only one. And in a bid to understand why I have so many sleepless nights and to feel a little better about it, I wanted to research into what really does keep me – and everyone else – awake at night. As I’m definiltey not the only one!

Studies has investigated what’s keeping us awake at night, and it looks like there are a few factors that top the list: high anxiety levels, thinking about work, the stresses of day to day life, big activities, social media, and snoring partners among the factors responsible for our sporadic sleep patterns.

One that I was interested in the most was day to day stresses and big activities. Isn’t it crazy how that when something big is going on in your life, we choose to dwell about it at night.

One of the topics I found that keeps many people wide awake at night is moving house, and the whole process involved. This was revealed to me by Happy Beds, who shared some fascinating results. They conducted a survey of 2,000 people from across the country to find out that buying and selling homes can affect sleep, and a whole lot of moving issues.

The moving home survey found that the average person has moved fewer than 5 times in their life. In fact, 1 in 10 have only moved once. However, that hasn’t prevented lost sleep.

It further revealed that 87% of people find moving home stressful, and 71% have lost at least one night’s sleep as a result. Shockingly, 10% had their sleep severely disrupted for more than a week before their big move.

It was interesting to see that he average duration of sleep before a move is just 5 hours 20 minutes – with some claiming it can take more than 2 weeks to have a full nights rest once in their new home.

For me, it’s definitely work stress, any big activities and anxiety which keeps me awake. I need to work on clearing my mind and learning how to write lists of my worries before I go to bed, so I know I can switch off and approach them in the morning.
