As a beauty fanatic, the current ‘Work It!’ campaign being ran by Selfridges really made me listen up when I was informed about it last week. With the famous quote by Harry Gordon Selfridge “There’s No Fun Like Work”, Selfridges have set out to explore how the way we work is changing with Work It!. I experienced the campaign first hand myself by attending a fantastic evening based around Careers in Makeup, held by Alex Box and Spob O’Brien at San Carlo Farmacia del Dolce in the Manchester Exchange Square Selfridges, which I’ll go into further down in this post…
With the announcement in February this year that the rate of employment in the UK is at its highest since records began in 1971, work and work-life balance have never been more on people’s mind than today. But are we all still doing the 9 to 5? Has hyper-connectivity changed our working lives? Is anybody not working in the service industry these days? What does it mean for retail? What about fun and work?
Linda Hewson, Selfridges’ Creative Director says: “With work being such a huge part of people’s daily concern, we felt that this year, more than any other, the time was ripe for a look at some of the trends that are currently reshaping both the workplace and the retail space and champion ‘me time’ as a way to reclaim a better work-life balance.”
This is where “Work It!” comes in. Running for six weeks, Selfridges has called on a mix of experts to help define the near future of work and offer inspirational fixes to make work, work better.
The Work It! campaign provides the opportunity to maximise your lunch break in order to help you achieve a better work/life balance. I haven’t managed to pop down on my lunch break yet, but I did join Illasmasqua’s Head of Professional Development, Spob, and Creative Director, Alex Box, for an insightful talk to discover what drives its leading talents. This exclusive event was a rare opportunity to hear about the inner-workings of the beauty industry, and the ladies were so inspirational and shared their backgrounds, creative thoughts and inspirations all centered around make-up artistry as a career.
As the Work It! campaign provides the opportunity to maximise your lunch break in order to help you achieve a better work/life balance, they have got some of the following events coming up in the Manchester area, which focus on beauty. With amazing express beauty experiences, Selfridges are hosting drop-in treatments that fit with your schedule to an edit of multi-tasking must-haves (…and eye candy, such as this male model at the MAC counter this weekend!)

Whilst I am on the topic of Selfridges, the Women’s floor in Selfridges Manchester Exchange Square is undergoing a transformation. As part of the £3M refurbishment, the store has just unveiled their new shoe department including new brands Aquazzura, Givenchy, Pedro Garcia and Victoria Beckham. How gorgeous does it look?
I think I’ll be spending a lot of time in Selfridges this May!
