If you’ve been keeping up to date with What Emma Did over the past month, you’ll have noticed a fairly dominant theme: natural beauty. I’m really making a conscious effort to be more involved with using natural ingredients in my skin and hair care regimes, as I’m becoming more aware about what’s actually included in today’s products. There are so many more nasties, such as SLS (the cheap formula to add a ‘fake’ foam) added to products to make them cheaper and more affordable, but when you look at the bigger picture, in my eyes it isn’t worth it.
The latest brand I have discovered which prides itself on using quality ingredients is Davines and there range of OI Shampoo’s and conditioners. This is a little quote from the brand over at the website, which sums up their mission in this overcrowded beauty world: “By creating beauty sustainably, we encourage people to take care of themselves, of the environment in which they live and work, of the things they love.”
Davines have been crafting quality products that are scientifically engineered to work, and express a distinctive style and spirit, from the very beginning. So today, I’ve put together my thoughts on how I found their OI Shampoo and OI Conditioner.
For an Italian brand whose work is a thoughtful balance of substance and style, nature and science, people and spirit, they certainly have packaging designed to a fine art. How pretty and modern do these products look? The simple yet stylish combination of bright white and deep black look professional and high end, looking professional from first glance. When I have looked online and trawled through the many lines of the OI collection, I actually feel like this range has been designed just to my tastes! I want all these products lined up in my bathroom. They are the perfect product range to sit on my bathroom side – so sleek and minimal.
The OI Shampoo uses Roucou oil, known for its anti aging and strong anti-oxidant action. This is pretty essential for have in a hair care product, after all, we aim for strong hair which survives the aging process. A little bit of background research on this shown me it’s actually a potent Amazonian extract derived from the fruit of the achiote which is 100 times richer in beta-carotene than carrots. This helps to stimulate melanin synthesis (and in turn, maintain your hair’s natural pigment). I found this a joy to use, with it’s creamy formula leaving a smoothing feel to my hair after rinsing out. Some shampoos can feel quite rough on the hair even though they lather up quite nice, but not this one. It aims to give hair extraordinary softness, shine and body, and I certainly noticed the silky feel it left on mine.
I was equally as impressed with the OI Conditioner, and may even go as far as to say a little more impressed. Again, it’s brimming with roucou oil, and aims to be a gentle conditioner which softens, conditions and volumises. I noticed straight away that it wins at being incredibly nourishing, and it’s also said to help accelerate the drying process, while shielding hair strands’ structure from the damages brought on by heat styling. Always a bonus, as it means you don’t have to go too overboard with applying a heat protection product afterwards (although I still do spritz some on just incase!). I leave this to condition for 2-3 minutes then rinse out, and can instantly feel the silky finish its leaves on my locks. My frazzled blonde hair seems much smoother, which eliminated frizz (from the dry split ends) and manages to hold that touch of ‘oomph’ that I struggled to get from heavier conditioners.
This product range is slightly pricey, with the shampoo retailing at £16 and the conditioner at £17, but the lovely ingredients and stylish packaging makes it worth it for me. Plus, as mentioned before, not only do they look slightly awesome on display in the bathroom, they genuinely do what they say on the label too.
