I don’t know about you, but recently, I’ve been noticing a spike of interest and excitement on social media around Aruba, as a holiday and travel destination. It’s come from a few different types of people – one being travel bloggers, who I’ve seen jet off to this sunny Caribbean island and post some incredible photos. Pure paradise sprang to mind, I’ll just be honest.
That said, I’ve also seen an influx of couples, families and solo travellers take to social media to share experiences of luxurious breaks to Aruba, with the most stunning beach and sea photography.
I can’t get enough of a good old beach holiday, but one with breathtaking sights and lots of culture is everything I look for (and I love discovering up-and-coming locations…)
So, if Aruba really is the destination of choice, I perhaps need to explore it a little further. So let’s have a look why it’s one of the most up and coming destinations for 2018…
ARUBA: Where is it?
Aruba is located on the outside fringes of the Hurricane Belt in the heart of the southern Caribbean, 15 miles north of Venezuela. The island of Aruba is 70 square miles (19.6 miles long and 6 miles wide across its longest point). Aruba’s 108,000 inhabitants live within six official districts including Oranjestad (city center), Paradera, San Nicolas, Noord, Santa Cruz and Savaneta. Pos Chikito is known as the island’s unofficial seventh district.
Highlights of Aruba:
As mentioned earlier, I haven’t yet been to Aruba, but it’s crept up on my travel bucket list. It’s said to be home to one of the “Top 10 Beaches in the World,” making Aruba the most revisited destination in the Caribbean, with more than half of all visitors returning year after year.
It’s a combination of adventure meets serenity on this island of contradictions – where the sun-kissed, sandy shores of the world-famous beaches intersect with the rugged desert of the northeast coast in Arikok National Park, and where Dutch influence meets American ease.
For those who love adventure and outdoor experiences, you can bask in the cool waters at the Natural Pool (Conchi) and hike through the Guadirikiri Caves and Ayo Rock Formations, uncovering history and civilization at every turn.
Aquatic adventures are in abundance, along the world-famous beaches, attracting windsurfers, kite surfers, sailors, snorkelers, divers and more.
But for me, the peace and tranquillity of the many rejuvenating spa treatments at the spa hotels, or strolling through downtown Oranjestad, exploring high end shopping centres, historic museums and vibrant art galleries, is what draws me in…
And at night? Island excitement continues at dusk with a variety of bars, casinos and festivals beckoning tourists and locals alike.
Festivals and Events
Boasting more than 50 events annually, Aruba hosts festive island FESTIVALS celebrations for both travellers and locals to enjoy. Hosted every Thursday on Main Street in San Nicolas, the Caribbean Festival ignites Caribbean culture with Carnival parades, dancing and local culinary fare.
Downtown Oranjestad comes to life each Tuesday as locals and guests join together for the Bon Bini welcome festival showcasing musicians, dancers, artists and craftsmen who parade around in their very best wares…
All the info…
If you’re anything like me, a good old visual or two really helps me out when exploring new destinations. You’ll usually find me engrossed in travel bloggers posts and all those wanderlust vlogs on YouTube, so I thought it’s probably more than ideal to let you have a little quick watch of this video.
Now don’t tell me you haven’t got the Aruba travel bug after watching this!
