Lifestyle: Moddershall Oaks Country Spa

If you could ask me to describe my perfect day, second to being on holiday somewhere tropical and breathtakingly beautiful, I’d say a luxury spa day. Facials, massages, Jacuzzi’s, pampering, dining… the whole spa day experience is one of my favourite ways to relax.

I don’t go on nearly as many spa experiences as I should, and every time I am lucky enough to spend the day at a spa, I realise how important relaxing ‘me’ time is. So to break up my Summer season, and just after my boyfriends birthday as a little belated surprise, we took ourselves to Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat in Staffordshire.

You may be familiar with Moddershall Oaks if you have researched stunning wedding venues in the Staffordshire area, or even just by looking for indulgent spa breaks. You see Moddershall Oaks is one of those with hotel rooms adjoining to the place, so you can actually take yourself there for a complete getaway break. Now that would have been more than ideal – you’ll find the place tucked away down country roads and nestled in-between a little valley. Complete hideaway bliss.

So, myself and my boyfriend came along on what was possibly the hottest Sunday of the year. How is that for timing? Moddershall is quite popular for it’s gorgeous outside heated bubbling pool and lounging area. 27 degrees’ heat? You’ll find me right there, sun lounger and all!

The Jacuzzi and Indoor Pool

We spent the first part of our day checking out the indoor pool and the heated Jacuzzi, which luckily we had to ourselves due to it being a fairly quiet Sunday. The Jacuzzi is always one of my favourite aspects of a spa day, mainly because I love lying back in the bubbles and totally relaxing.

This one in particular had huge water chutes which blast water into the Jacuzzi, as well as two areas which allow you to properly lie down and feel the bubbles jet out onto your whole body. With outdoor views of nature, it was truly lovely.

The Outdoor Pool + Lounge Area

I have to come straight to this part as I was super excited to discover the outdoor pool area. I’m really biased with this part of the spa, mainly because of the incredible heat we were lucky to have on this particular visit! The 27-degree weather meant we could perch on a sun lounger poolside, soak up in the warm Jacuzzi, drink cold drinks at the pool, and literally soak up the sun like we were abroad!

I literally felt like I was on my holidays, the vibe was fantastic. However, I did analyse this section as if it was a typical rainy day in England, think of a typical day my readers would experience here. The outdoor Jacuzzi pool is heated, so it’s more hot tub than anything else, making it perfect for colder days. There’s also outdoor heating and a huge fireplace which must look magical all lit up at night. The only thing you’d sacrifice is lying flat in a bikini on the loungers, enjoying waitress service whilst trying to cool yourself down!

I noticed a lot of hen parties especially were circulating around the poolside, making it a great day for a girly event. There’s a bar menu too, which means you can enjoy sharers, nibbles and main lunch meals outside and around the pool. Bliss!

Dining at Moddershall Oaks

The dining situation at Moddershall was all very organised and extremely appealing, from sitting down in the lounge area upon arrival, browsing the food menu and sipping a bellini welcome drink, to the dining experience itself.

The hostess serves up your welcome drink, while allowing you some time to choose your 2 courses for lunch from the menu. For a spa retreat place, I wasn’t expecting lots of choice, but I was actually really impressed with all the options. I selected the coronation crab salad for my starter, which was like a dream starter for me as a) I love crab, and b) coronation fillings are always one of my favourites! Combine the two and I’m overjoyed.

For my main course, I was torn between the venison parpadelle bolognaise and the haddock fishcakes, which I eventually chose the fishcakes. Both courses were lovely – portion sizes were completely deceiving, with their vegetables and salads stuffed underneath the main focus of the meal.

I thoroughly enjoyed my food, and the service was fantastic. I love nothing more than tucking into a freshly made meal whilst sitting in my snugly robe from my spa day!

The Gym and Spa

A lot of people think I’m slightly crazy for trying out the gym section of a spa day, but that’s OK, I agree it’s a little odd when you come for a day of R&R! However, that particular week had been so manic at work that I hadn’t made one visit to the gym, so I decided to make the most of the fully kitted out gymnasium and spend 45 minutes loosening up again…

So it’s a small gym, but has everything I need for a full workout. Rows of free weights, a couple of weight machines, matts to do floor workouts, rowing machines, cross trainers and treadmills – pretty much all I need.

It’s very air conditioned, which was just what I needed on this particularly warm day. It was fairly empty, which in all honesty, what do you expect when there’s a fantastic spa and gorgeous grounds to explore?

The Outdoor Grounds

After our work out, we took to the Woodland Walk – an exploring walk through the woodland grounds that wrap around Moddershall Oaks. Although Moddershall is fairly small in itself and it’s building, its surrounding areas are enormous, so we did fear getting lost a little!

We could have walked around for hours as we delved deeper and deeper into the woods. It was so pretty, so tranquil and full of nature. If you were to stay over at Moddershall Oaks, venturing on a 2 hour walk or hiring the bikes would be super fun, and also very relaxing. It’s so silent around the grounds, it’s a real good chance to get that needed ‘me’ time.

There’s also a tennis court outside too, which we wanted to try out except the weather was just so bloomin’ hot!

Whilst we were touring the area and walking around the place, I couldn’t help but notice how amazing this place is for a wedding. Moddershall Oaks offer a wedding service on their grounds, and wow – it’s super special with its lakeside set up and tree lined grounds.

They have a covered area outside all ready for ceremonies, giving a real unique way to give your wedding a magical twist. The ‘venue’ is situated in the heart of Staffordshire’s countryside literally on the water’s edge of their private lake, giving the most beautiful photo opportunities. I can see why people come here to tie the knot, with its peaceful ambiance, picturesque woodlands and gorgeous grounds.

Last but not least – well certainly not least at all – the incredible treatments we were both eagerly booked in for. I was down for a 55 minute Elemis full body massage, which was more than needed. I’d spent the whole month prior hunched over my laptop all day during the day job, and over my laptop all evening for the blog and other bits, meaning tense was an under-statement.

My therapist chose a selection of body oils and literally sent me to heaven for 55 minutes. I like a medium pressure, which was spot on, and I could have drifted off to sleep (but I didn’t want to miss the amazing feeling of course!).

I’ve had a number of massages before but this one was by far one of my most enjoyable. The pressure was just right, and she worked her magic on those horrid knots that had accumulated in and around my neck and shoulders area.

All in all, I can’t fault my visit to Moddershall Oaks. I only wish I had have been able to stay over for the night and really made a weekend of it. I’d recommend this for a couple who want a getaway break for the day and night, but even more so for a girly weekend, be it a hen weekend or special birthday occasion.

Thanks to all the team for being so friendly, welcoming and attentive. Brilliant service from start to finish!
