Sunday 6th March see’s Mothering Sunday arrive, and it’s time to show our Mum’s just how special they are. Sounds simple enough, yet so many of us can find it quite difficult to think up the perfect gift. I think the problem some people get into is being stuck in a little bit of a gift rut. I mean, our Mum’s always seem to have everything, right? There are only so many Mothering Sunday’s where you can turn up at her door, clutching a bunch of flowers and luxury foil wrapped box of chocolates, before completely losing any form of surprise factor.
I’m not the most genius with gift ideas, but I do try and think of things my Mum would enjoy doing. Tomorrow I’ll be taking her out to Australasia in Manchester for a Mothers Day lunch, and I’ve also rounded up a few little fragrance and skincare gifts she possibly wouldn’t treat herself too. The main gift is (and I know she reads my blog everyday – hello Mum! – so I’m totally ruining the surprise now) an overnight stay in Liverpool, taking her to The Cavern Club, where The Beatles used to perform. It’s something she has mentioned she would love to do, so it makes sense to spend some quality time with her and book a little trip.
For the rest of you… well you are leaving it very last minute! Hopefully my little round-up gift guide will shed some light on some thoughtful ideas below:
It may be generic, but giving the gift of fragrance does mean your Mum doesn’t have to buy it for herself. And lets face it, buying perfume for ourselves feels so lame sometimes. The newest scents I’ve been trying out are the Light & Dark range from Leighton Denny (£43.50 for 70ml). More popularly known for his successful nail business, Leighton Denny launched into fragrance last year, and the new Light & Dark Desire and Lively shades are great for those who appreciate a strong scent. ‘Desire’ is a unisex scent, and a special blend of absolute oils including vetivert, patchouli and cedar tempered with moss, amber and crisp spicy elements of pepper and nutmeg. It also has citrus top notes of grapefruit, lemon and bergamot, making it quite a warming scent. ‘Lively’ is again unisex, with citrus top notes of lemon, grapefruit and bergamot, in what ultimately becomes a celebration of dark woods. Mixed with vetiver, patchouli and cedar, and the more spicier amber, moss, pepper and nutmeg, this is a truly unique scent.
Gifting your Mum with a fragrance she may not have discovered before, such as Leighton Denny Light & Dark, is a refreshing change, and I can totally bet you she will find these scents truly unique.
If you are really struggling with some Mother’s Day gifts, why not buy a box from a stationary store, such as Paperchase, and fill it with little makeup gifts? A new product I’ve recently discovered which I feel would make a lovely little gift addition is this Kiss & Pout Lip Balm set. It comes beautifully gift boxed, and contains 3 juicy shades which all soften and condition lips, as well as add a subtle hint of colour and gloss. Mother’s love to care of their skin, hair, nails and lips, so this little set gives her that excuse. The three shades are Bite, Kissable and Smooch – which are sweet little peach, red and pink shades. They are super conditioning and great to pop in handbags or purses. The set costs £12.50 and in my opinion, is a truly thoughtful addition to a box of cosmetics for Mum.
If you want to create a gift box with a few more essential items than just makeup, why not add a few hero beauty and skincare products in too? Brands I always recommend include L’Oreal, Vaseline and Palmers; literally fail safe brands with great reputations. You’ll see in my above photo t the top of this post that I have included a Palmers Coconut Oil Hand Cream and Body Lotion Spray in my gift suggestions. This is purely because this brand are fantastic at fading scars, marks and unsightly sun spots, which unfortunately, most Mum’s are prone too! I can’t rave enough any products with coconut oil infused into them, and this Palmer’s range is brilliant (from using it myself!).
This idea is definitely one with a difference, and gives your Mum the chance to experience lots of different products. The first one I recommend is a new launch from The Fragrance Shop, who have put together a box of sample perfumes called the ‘Discovery Box’. When signed up to this, fragrance lovers will receive a box each quarter containing samples that have been carefully hand-picked by The Fragrance Shop experts. The samples are a mix of male and female fragrances, allowing you to discover both new launches and classic bestsellers throughout the year. Each box also contains an information booklet, as well as discount vouchers for each of the featured fragrances. The box I have photographed above features ten key fragrances such as Nina Ricci’s ‘Nina’, Paco Rabanne’s ‘Lady Million Eau My Gold!’ and Hugo Boss ‘BOSS Bottled’. If you really don’t know which fragrance your Mum will love – why not sign her up for this?
Other options are the Look Fantastic Beauty Boxes, which come packed with makeup, skincare, hair and nail gifts. You can read more about over at my recent post here.
When all else fails, treat your Mum to some yummy cakes, biscuits, chocolates or her own favourite indulgent dessert. I found two slightly unique sweet treat surprises which are much better than your regular Milk Tray Box – the Thomas J Fudges Flapjacks and Monty Bojangles Truffles. Not only do these both come perfectly packaged in a pretty, vintage inspired box, they are different from the everyday Supermarket traditions you see in your local Tesco. The Thomas J Fudge Flapjacks I recommend are the White Chocolate Oat ones packed with cranberries and an orange zest. For £3.25 a box, they are more than ideal with a cup of Earl Grey for a scrumptious elevenses! If your Mum has a bit of a weakness for chocolate, then you could treat her to a luxury box of Monty Bojangles Truffles. They have a Ruby Fruit Sunday box which contain moreish red berry & crumbly biscuit,French luxury truffles finished with a generous dusting of exquisite bitter-sweet cocoa. Lovely to bring round this Sunday!
Decide whether your Mum is more of a gold or sterling silver lady, and if you really don’t know, look at other options such as white gold (slightly pricier!) or rose gold. A pair of small drop earrings or a pretty heart pendant on a chain can’t go wrong…
The key is to think of whether your Mother needs something ‘material’, or would appreciate more of an experience. Either way, get your thinking caps on – you have three days!
