Fitness: The importance of sports nutrition

Staying in shape isn’t all just done in the gym – we all know that. It’s what you do outside the gym that also counts, and maybe even more so! Anybody who has worked out hard for years but seen no results is not paying attention to this mindset. Proper nutrition – sports nutrition and supplements – is just as vital to help us achieve our fitness goals. This is true for both men and women, big and small. There seems to be this notion that certain supplements, like protein powder, are exclusively for men, but in my opinion, it’s nonsense. I do go to the gym (a couple of times a week when possible!), but I have learnt that this isn’t the only life choice helping me to keep in shape.

Protein powder is just that – protein powder, and works irrespective of gender. If you truly want to see your workout life elevate to the next level, what you put in your body is just as important as the exercises you’re doing. Here’s a few protein pointers to bear in mind if you’re currently working on your Summer body…

You can recover much more quickly post-workout

When you’ve hit your abs hard, they need to recover and come back, stronger! They won’t do that if you’re gulping down a coke and a plate of chips. Proper nutrition and post-workout supplements will substantially aid the recovery of your body, no matter what you did in the gym. Just think about the last time you fell ill. What made you feel better afterwards? Probably a nice, tasty hot meal. Imagine that your workouts are that illness, and a proper diet and substantial supplementation are the hot meal.

 You can have a more intense workout

Energy bars, pre workout or energy drinks – whichever you use – can take your workouts to the next level. Secondly, your mental state is just as important as your physical one. If you feel fully energised and ready to go, you’ll be more focused and will work harder. As a result, you’ll have a better workout, and will feel better about yourself.

We’ve all had those gym sessions where we feel like it just isn’t working out for you. It feels like you aren’t really exercising properly, and that you’re wasting time. Perhaps this is down to a lack of energy and poor nutrition? Staying properly fuelled ensures you’re always ready to perform at your peak.

You can be ready at any time, and any place

If you’re looking to stay fit when travelling, it’s unlikely you’ll be cooking up a quality balanced meal every evening. You may need something quick, and equally as nutritious. Sports nutrition and supplementation are quick and easy to prepare, and are usually packed full of good stuff. That’s not to say it should replace your meals – absolutely not! But if used properly and in the right location, you can’t go wrong. I often put a little bit of protein powder into my porridge oats, or make smoothies with them when I’m out of fruit.

And it’s far better to guzzle down a protein shake than a cheeseburger, right?
