Fill my life with Junk

As well as running ‘What Emma Did’, I also have two other jobs which take up my time. The day job involves working at a photography studio, which is all sorts of hours and all sorts of days, and I am also a fashion writer for the Manchester Fashion Network. And not forgetting little bits of contributing and blogging for fashion sites in the spare hours. Busy life? Just a bit!

So what did Emma go and do today? Fill up the only bit of spare time I have left by enrolling on a Dressmaking and Design course at Junk in Manchester. But if you ask me its spare time well spent. I have always been wrapped up in fashion journalism, styling, reporting etc., that I have never really gave myself time to get a feel of the designing world I often write about.

I love Junk (the shop i mean, I have a lot of junk I don’t particularly love right now). The brand first burst into the UK in 2005 to fill a sizeable gap for fun, fresh thinking and affordable fashion. The first boutique opened in the Bohemian retail utopia of West Didsbury (where I happen to live) and since then visited festivals and trade shows to spread the Junk word. 2007 saw the opening of its bigger store in Manchester city centre, which has attracted a unique fan base and a lot of attention from the media.

If you like handmade garments made with a little bit of love and a kiss of creativity, then you will see why Junk is such a little gem of a brand. I know if I step out in a little dress from Junk, I’m never going to have that frightful moment of bumping into someone on an evening out wearing my dress (shuddering at the thought). So go that step further and learn how to make your own junk, after all, everyone needs a fashionable hobby!

Courses at Junk cost £120 for 4 weeks, but lots of colleges, universities and learning centres across the UK specialise in Fashion, so look them up!
