Fashion: Winter Appropriate Outfits

what emma did

I don’t know about you. but I’m officially feeling the chill now. There’s no denying that winter is upon us, and with it comes the need to give our current wardrobes a much-needed overhaul. However, you don’t have to spend a fortune to update your outfits in time for when the temperature drops. It’s not something I want to particularly spend a lot of money on this season with Christmas arriving, so I wanted to show you a couple of simple ways you can make your favourite summer clothes winter appropriate- with minimal cost and effort.

Add tights

It’s a simple trick, and one I carry out all the time! I’m never without tights with a nice daytime dress, and it can make all the difference when it comes to transitioning your existing wardrobe into the colder months. By adding opaque tights to your outfits, you can also still rock your favourite denim shorts and summery shoes while keeping the winter chills at bay. You don’t necessarily have to stick to plain, black tights either. If you’re feeling more daring and want to try something more fashion-forward, there are plenty of patterned and colourful hosiery options available from sites like Tights and More.

Layer up

Instead of boxing away your summer wear until next year, why not try mastering the art of layering and use what you already have? Whether you’re adding a chunky-knit cardigan over a tank top, wearing a buttoned-up shirt underneath a shift dress or pairing a cropped jacket with a strappy jumpsuit, layering can provide you with added warmth while giving out-of-season outfits a fresh new look. You can see above I have layered up a sheer white collar shirt with a deep purple long sleeve top (not quite a jumper, but the layering up of both sure keeps in the heat!). Don’t be afraid to play around with different textures and colours either. Bold summer prints can make a stylish impact when layered with more subtle, understated winter hues. Below, I’ve added my favourite tartan neck scarf to my black waist-tie coat for added warmth without going overboard with new accessories…

Update your accessories

One of the easiest ways to transform a one-layer outfit into one that’s suitable for the festive season is by updating your accessory collection. Not only can winter-friendly accessories go a long way in terms of revamping your look with minimal hassle, but they can also come in handy for those blustery days when you’re in need of some extra coverage. Woollen capes, blanket scarves and fur stoles are great for bulking up lighter layers, while chunky-knit mittens and beanie hats make a stylish addition to almost any ensemble. I received a fantastic collection of simple accessories earlier this week- just three key items will take me through the entire Winter – a new scarf, hat and gloves. If you chose muted greys and whites, you’ll find these can last you all year round.

Bring out the boots

If you can’t quite seem to say goodbye to your favourite sundress and bare legs, knee-length boots may be the solution you’re looking for. While those well-loved strappy sandals you wore on holiday are best left for warmer climes, investing in a pair of boots is a great way to make your summer dresses more seasonally appropriate. Another way to make a style statement while keeping your legs cosy is by pairing ankle boots with thick, thigh-high socks for an on-trend look. The ankle boots below are an affordable pair I picked up last week that look great worn with tights and a dress…

With a few fashion tricks like these up your sleeve, you should be able to create a host of new outfits from your existing wardrobe to take you through the chilly season in style.
