Fashion: My SS16 Hero Piece

Hooray- a new season has arrived, and at this particular time of the year, I’m thinking about new hero pieces. I’ve wished away the Winter season for so long, dreaming of lighter evenings and warmer temperatures. And finally, after what seems like a ridiculously long wait, Spring/Summer 2016 has arrived!

As I live in Manchester, my local place to visit for a shopping spree is the intu Trafford Center, which is roughly a 25 minute drive from my house. I genuinely love saving a day aside for a shopping session here due to the fact the centre has all my favourite High Street stores under one roof. So when I heard about their latest fashion campaign – which explores SS16 trends – it got me thinking about what my new hero piece would be for Spring . intu highlighted some of the new trends for the season to help me think, which include Nauticaluxe (nautical inspired colours and prints – stripes, navy, white, red), Monochrome (stripes, spots and solids in black, white), Pink Soda (soft pastel shades of pink), Imperial red (bold red colour), and Boho bandit (70s inspired florals, paisleys and shapes).  I have to admit, I’m a huge sucker for monochrome as I adore simple bold colours of black and white.

Keeping this trend in mind, I hunted myself down a gorgeous pair of printed monochrome culottes from New Look at intu Trafford Center, which incorporates both the colour scheme and detail to represent a modern take on  the monochrome trend. So now it’s time to showcase my SS16 hero piece three ways – dressing the culottes up (or down!) to represent different key looks I’ll take on during the new season. This is what I love about monchome; it’s so incredibly versatile to style around, giving multiple options…

The first look is a Spring evening look, where I have teamed the monochrome culottes up with a simple white colour block top from H&M, which falls off the shoulder. Off-the-shoulder tops just happen to be one of the trends that came out from LFW last month, so this look is completely on-trend! I added a pair of chunky black shoes to add a dressier feel, and I could have brought in a little black clutch bag too I guess to really complete the look. I love how fresh and fashionable this look is, even though I have stuck to a darker colour palette for the Spring…

My next method for styling up my hero culottes was to add a more relaxed, sporty vibe. I teamed the culottes up with a fitted high-neck black top from Topshop, a slouchy shoulder bag, and a pair of Adidas trainers. Much more sporty and cooler, and definitely a look I’ll be wearing during those weekend days. Like how I have also tucked my hair into my top to mock up a fake ‘lob’ haircut? Totally feeling the boyish vibe with this look…

So I’ve styled up my beautiful monochrome culottes with a pretty evening top, a casual outfit, and now for some smart attire. These culottes can be worked into a ‘workwear’ look, simply by adding a sheer white shirt, and a matching print pair of kitten heels and over-sized clutch bag. Super grown-up and professional for the office, yet holds that on-trend look. The shirt in particular I’m wearing here is from Missguided at Selfridges at Intu Trafford Centre – that little concession is such a god send!

If you are situated near Manchester like myself, you’ll be pleased to know that intu Trafford Centre are actually hosting some fabulous fashion shows on the 8th, 9th and 10th of April, in the new Style Garden section. There’ll be regular shows from some of the top brands in the centre –  Selfridges, John Lewis, Gap, Monsoon, Glamorous etc. The shows will definitely provide a good dose of style inspiration for SS16!

intu’s online fashion hub, Inspire Me, has also put a feature together which discusses the SS16 Hero Piece campaign, rounding up lots of expert opinions on what their hero piece recommendations are! From pinafore dresses to fashionable trainers, there’s a whole lot of outfit inspiration going on over there too.

So there you have it- you’ve seen my new season hero piece, so what’s yours?
