As the end of April starts to set in, I’m getting more and more excited about Summer. So my Summer body might not yet be ready, but my wardrobe is more than ready to be updated. I recently went on a little bit of a shopping spree for some new items, to lead me straight into the Summer months. This shopping trip is totally to blame for psyching me up for the warmer months, as now I’m dreaming about Summer evenings and wearing some new bikinis!
So I’ll hold right back – because let’s face it, I can’t stroll around in denim cut off’s just yet. I can, however, start to incorporate some of my favourite SS16 trends into my everyday outfits, whether that be for work, play, or casual weekends. As a follow up to my Fashion Week 2016, I’ve rounded up some of my favourite looks which reflect SS16, and the most stylish yet achievable ways to wear these …
It feels like the nautical trends comes round and round every year, and SS16 is no different. This time, wear it a little differently, rather than the basic long sleeve striped tops. The outfit above is a bodysuit, which features a fitted body and low v front which can be laced up tight or slacked off a little. Team with skinny jeggings for a relaxed day look, or pair with a high-waisted pencil skirt for a figure loving evening look.
Lace up detail tops and dresses are huge this season, and look great for a range of occasions. This Missguided white lace up top below is slightly ribbed, yet also of a thick material, which comes with a lace up front middle section. Lace-up’s feature everywhere – classic tops, day dresses, crop tops and even lace up shoes, where the straps entwine the whole way up the leg. It’s a fun trend, so play around with it, layering up with colours and textures.
Good news for those who love fuller shaped clothing and Victorian inspired shapes – puffy sleeves are back! The more voluminous an sculpted, the better. Think crisp white blouses with puffy shaped sleeves, teamed up with tailored trousers or fitted jeans.
The tomboy trend is back this season, with an emphasis on box shaped tops, baggy boyfriend style jeans, and oversize shirts. If you’re worried about looking too casual or laid back when wearing this trend, find a smart styled top which features a more structured shape. This box sleeve top in a dark khaki green – again from Missguided – is one of my favourite new tops for work.
Forget frilly layers, this season’s ruffles come in a decidedly more grown-up, less girlish guise. Think asymmetric ruffled hems and strong architectural details. As this trend is fairly detailed, keep it toned down by wearing it in subtle shades of cream, grey and light pastels.
High shine fabrics, metals and embellishments are huge for the Summer, particularly in reflective golds and silvers. For me personally, I always feel a little too flashy wearing wearing metallic clothing in the Summer, so I chose to wear this trend in the form of accessories. I prefer sleek, modern pieces, which look statement and girly, avoiding anything too ‘OTT’ or novelty. These chic gold drop earrings below are the perfect earrings to add a touch of high shine glamour to a look, which I usually wear for the evenings. During the day, I tend to stick to a quality pair of studs in an iconic design, such as Vivienne Westwood earrings.
It wouldn’t be spring without a flourish of floral prints – and this time round they come imbued with a nostalgic Seventies sensibility. The print is more clustered and ditsy than some of the previous floral trends, and this time around, it can be worn in an array of bright and bold colours.
As we’re in April at the moment, another look I’m crushing over is the whole ‘Festival Trend’. Coachella has taken place, and we’ve got the delights of V Fest and Glastonbury on the horizon. If you are one of the lucky ones heading to a festival this Spring/Summer, then head over to this Coachella celebrity fashion round-up over at intu’s Inspire Me blog. I gave my own little opinion of Kendall Jenner’s style, so have a little look!
I’ll be keeping in mind some of the above when indulging in my next Summer shop, which will probably be for some high Summer items, like swimwear! Are there any trends in particular you guys are loving for the new SS16 season? Feel free to share with me below…
