As part of my attempt to ‘clean up’ my wardrobe and update my clothing for Spring, I turned to assessing my denim situation. Luckily for me, my line of work enables me to dress up or dress down in slightly casual attire on a daily basis, although of course, I like to make an effort. I find having a selection of fail safe denim jeans to hand an absolute god send – all those mornings of deciding what to wear made easier by pulling on a fitted pair of jeans.
For me, I prefer the skinny style. I have a fairly petite frame, which means skinny jeans suit my body type quite well. The only problem I then have is considering what to wear with the jeans. But hey, once you have the bottoms sorted, the rest will fall into place!
When Matalan recently challenged me to showcase how I style up my skinnies, I jumped to the chance. Skinnies are pretty much the only jean style I wear, so I usually style these up on a daily basis. As these are quite a casual item, I try to smarten them up with stylish key pieces, but keeping in with the whole ‘laid back theme’. So lets take a look…
The skinnies I’m wearing are from Matalan’s denim selection, and come in a dark denim wash. For keeping a smart/casual look for work, I have dressed these up with a mustard roll neck jumper from H&M, and a monochrome printed jacket from River Island (which is currently in the sale for £25 – it’s such an investment as this will never date!). I also prefer to have a nice selection of darker denims, and then tend to blend in a little more and don’t scream out as being too relaxed.
Below, I removed the monochrome jacket and kept my look simple with just the roll neck and skinnies. I also paired with my favourite Converse sneakers, for a little more of a sportsluxe vibe.
But I’m sure you’ll agree that when you throw my lovely new Betty Jackson Tote Bag from Debenhams into the equation, the entire look goes a little more fashionable and classier. Still simple, but the accessory addition ups the style stakes a little!
So for a more chilled out weekend look, I’ve stripped the look back by pairing my skinnies up with a turquoise fitted vest top and a loose khaki cardigan. Again, the Converse have come out!
I truly love the fit of these jeans, and would you believe they cost just £15? Due to my petite frame, I do always worry that jeans will bag slightly at the back of the waist. Oh and not forgetting the knees – I always experience that bagging feel right behind the knees. But this style fit perfectly, and really grip my legs in the way skinny jeans should. It’s lovely to find an affordable pair which are snug to the leg and the waist together. It’s pretty rare I find them which do both!
If you are thinking of adding some shiny new denims to your Spring wardrobe any time soon, I highly recommend taking a little peek at Matalan’s current collection. So far, I’m super impressed with the fit, style and price, so I’m fairly confident you will be too!
