Fashion: Cosmopolitan Awards 4 Years On

Cosmo Blog Awards 20141Wow – here’s a little emotional post for a Monday! This week see’s the 2014 Cosmopolitan Blog Awards, taking it into the fourth year running for Cosmopolitan. Those who have been sticking by me over the years nay remember that four years ago, I scooped the award for Cosmopolitan Magazines Best New Fashion Blog – 9 months after launching my little website back in January 2010. How my life has changed is not even possible to explain in this post – there have been so many fantastic moments over the years and some absolute unbelievable opportunities that I thank Cosmopolitan for. Back then, the awards were in association with Collection (formerly Collection 2000 back then!) so this post is dedicated to them too.

In light of this years Cosmo Blog Awards 2014, I wanted to highlight some of the most amazing times over my past four years as a winner, and use this opportunity to encourage everyone to support this years shortlisted bloggers. I wouldn’t know where to begin to list everything, so here is just a couple of favorites throughout my journey…

Winning Cosmopolitan Blog Awards as Best New Fashion Blog 2010
The opportunity of winning itself – from the event at Sketch, to the write-up’s in the magazine, and the monthly guest blogging I got to do for Cosmo online following the win. And of course, the lovely little glass award that still sits on my window shelf today.

Attending LFW 2010 with Catwalk Queen
Straight after winning, I was whisked off to London Fashion Week, where I was alongside the team at CatwalkQueen, blogging for them at the shows. What an incredible insight to the world of ‘fro-ing’ and blogging about the designer collections immediately after the shows. A truly breathtaking experience.

Launching the Matalan blog and being their guest blogger for 6 months
I was lucky to spend 6 months taking over the Matalan blog every Friday, writing about trends, new launches and personal favorites each week. I was brought on board as the Matalan blog launched from scratch, therefore was included in all the excitement pre-launch, attending events associated with the brand.

Reporting live on BBC North West Today and Tonight
I attended Ladies Day at Aintree Races and was given the opportunity to give my opinions of the ladies fashions live on TV for BBC North West Today, then later for North West Tonight. This was an interview with Tony Livesley- a reporter I had seen on my screen for years! I remember being all dressed up with a strapless dress, silver embellished bow headband, and an absolutley beautiful Xen Tan spray tan. A day I will never forget.

Guest Blogging for BrandAlley and other retailers
As much as I would love to, this cannot possibly be summed up, as I have been lucky enough to work with some brilliant brands over the years. To highlight the most memorable, I did freelance stints with BrandAlley, GetTheLabel and Republic, which gave my blog excellent coverage and new followings. Working with such brands gives you a real ‘first insider’ feel to their collections, promotions and offers, and it’s something I still do a lot of today.

Joined Handpicked Media
Following my Cosmopolitan win, I was approached by Handpicked Media, who now represent me. I feel honored to be amongst some of the biggest names in the blogging world by joining them. Still represented by them today which connects me to some challenging blog projects by a wide varierty of brands. Unfortunatley, Handpicked are based in London which means I can rarely attend their events – I’m still hoping to make it one day!

Featured in More! Magazine and Grazia Online
It’s not just brands that I am lucky enough to get the chance to work with, but fashion publications too. I have appeared in More! giving my new season advice, as well as guest blogging on Grazia online.

Events and New Friends
All the bloggers reading this will agree when I say there is nothing nicer than connecting with other bloggers and meeting up at events. It used to be London which held them all, but due to the rise in the blogging world, Manchester now hosts some pretty damn good events these days! It’s so lovely to chat to other fashion, beauty, parenting, lifestyle and food bloggers – everyone has the same things in common and it’s nice to all talk ‘work’.

The opportunities have been endless -and continue to be- and I feel I owe Cosmopolitan, Catwalk Queen and Matalan in particular a huge thank you for giving me that invaluable stepping stone so many bloggers struggle to reach.

For the past year, I went over to Australia to work in marketing for designer department store head office David Jones, where the new surroundings of being down under and the constant chance to travel around left me with limited time to blog. Therefore the past year has seen WhatEmmaDid.com slow down slightly, but now I am back in Manchester, it is back on it’s usual form! In fact – life as a fashion and beauty blogger is just as busy as ever, where I’m so enthused to be continuing to┬áproduce news for all my readers on brands collections, products, events etc. I just wanted to add that I have also spent the past 7 years since graduating from University working in fashion PR & Marketing, therefore I love being busy in the fashion world 9-5 as well as during my free time. Having an active blog supports my career immensely.

Thank you to everyone for your support over the incredible journey. January see’s WhatEmmaDid.com turn 5 years old (she’s an oldie in the blogging world!) and I can promise you all lots of exciting things to mark the occasion. But for now – good luck to everyone in the Cosmopolitan Blog Awards 2014- enjoy every minute of it!
