Honda Sponsors Channel 4 Documentaries With A Twist…
If you’ve been watching any documentaries on Channel 4 lately, such as the cutting edge documentary ’Bums, Boobs and Botox’, you will probably have noticed that Honda are the sponsorships. I’m sure many of you have heard the now famous strapline ‘Documentaries on 4, sponsored by Honda‘ right?
Well the new campaign has a slight twist on what we saw last year from Channel 4 and Honda – to put it one way, this year see’s a more unique update! The brand-led films are starring real-life customers and how they use their Honda products in their own personal ways, with the first of four featuring Philippa, an alpaca breeder in Oxfordshire, who tends to the animals on her farm using her trusty Honda ATV. The next following phases, created by Holli Newton (Wieden + Kennedy / W+K) each feature a different Honda-owner in a mini-documentary, a range of idents and extra supporting content. The fun, interactive aspect is that each ident will carry a unique URL relating to its story, leading viewers to go online and find out more!

So if you like good, humorous real-life accounts, I’m sure you’ll have a giggle over at the online hub (www.honda.co.uk/stories) where there’s an engaging ‘Take Part’ section, specially for Honda-owners to upload their own stories, videos and photographs of the unusual way they use their Honda products. Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter will accompany all phases of the campaign, encouraging online users to check out the online hub, meaning lots of people will be able to view everyone’s personal accounts!

So what happens with the best, most unusual story of how Honda-owners use their products? Well, Wieden + Kennedy will pick their favourite, turn it into a final mini-documentary and then turn it into idents for TV! How brilliant would that be if that was your documentary for everyone to see?
Martin Moll, Head of Marketing at Honda (UK) said, ‘”I am very excited that our continued relationship sponsoring Channel 4 documentaries allows us to focus on our customers, highlighting their warm – sometimes quirky – personal experiences of Honda products either for fun or as a necessary part of their daily livelihood. We hope that this campaign will unveil further examples from our customers, one of which will be nominated to be brought to life on TV for a final set of idents later on in the year”.

I don’t have a Honda product myself, although after reading some of the fabulous personal stories on the ‘Your Stories’ section of the website, it made me realise how handy they can be! Adrien Bell, a sheep farmer, used his Honda Generator to power his sheep scanner so he could see as soon as the sheep become pregnant. There is also an account of a guy who used his Honda motorbike to stay ahead of all the other riders and make sure the road ahead is safe. He says his Honda allows him to pass the others quickly and safely. Not a bad bike then!
Do you have a Honda? If so, share to the world your unusual story!
